St Andrew’s Junior College ruggers beat Jurong JC 34-0 for third consecutive win
April 17, 2008
Story contributed by reader Thomas Tan
SAJC, Wednesday, April 16 , 2008 - St Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) continued their unbeaten run with a 34-0 win over Jurong Junior College (JJC) yesterday at SAJC.
SAJC went into the game knowing that a victory would send them into top four for the season, having thrashed Catholic Junior College and Millenia Institute previously. JJC, being the underdogs of this match, did not give up without putting up a tough fight for our boys. JJC gave a spirited showing in the first ten minutes, keeping the scoreline 0-0 for the first ten minutes. Things were not looking good for our boys as JJC was defending well and threatened to break our defence a couple of times. Nevertheless, our boys showed their qualities and scored their first tries in the 11th minute.
It was a blow for JJC as they were keeping up with the pace of the game. They never recovered from that try. The first half ended 17-0. The second half was interrupted twice by lightning and the game was under threat of being postponed, which meant the game would be restarted at 0-0, a situation that none of our boys wanted to be in. Fortunately, the game continued and our boys showed great determination to finish the game in style. However, JJC did not give up and still continue to defend greatly. JJC’s forward was tremendous for an inexperienced team, but however a yellow card for their hooker and an injury to their lock did not do them any favours in turning the match around.
Credit to JJC, they did not give the game to us as easy as expected. Their substitute provided them with some fresh legs and despite losing a main man in the scrum, JJC provided us with a equally strong reply in the forward battle. In the end two tries in the last minutes finish an entertaining game 34-0 in SAJC’s favour.
However, the superiority of SAJC’s attack broke the hearts of many, including mine and many neutrals. Even though I am a Saint, as an ex-national rugby player, I had hoped that rugby would be well developed throughout the whole of Singapore instead of just the the traditional powerhouses Saints, ACS, and Raffles.
This game showed that even a non-traditional school of rugby can have the ability to win against the traditionally strong rugby schools.
Good luck to JJC in your season.
SAINTS: bring back the A Division title to where it belongs.
